There are moments when you need to put on a suit and show your hospitality to guests or clients for business occasions. Are you also wondering about how to carry conversations with foreign clients? You might want to try the following…

Vocabulary

  • occasion(n.)場合
  • socialize(v.)社交
  • expect(v.)期望
  • impolite(adj.)
  • positive(adj.)正面的
  • negative(adj.)負面的
  • self-centered(adj.)
  • incautiously(adv.)
  • terminator(n.)終結者
  • embarrass(v.)困窘
  • sincerity(n.)

Breaking the Ice

Hello, welcome to Taichung.

Glad to meet you!

I have heard a lot about you.

I’ve been wanting to meet you.

Social Taboo

The greetings above will help you to easily break the ice and keep the conversation going. However, you need to remember that there are some taboos when socializing, such as…

taboos

One Word Answers

Do not simply answer questions with “yes” and “no”! When people ask you questions, they are expecting answers as well as questions. It’s very impolite if you give dead-end replies with a single word.

Negativity

There are positive topics and negative ones. Try not to be self-centered and too subjective during first-time conversations. You might incautiously become a conversation terminator!

Mic Hogging

People expect answers, not your life story. It’s embarrassing and awkward when you hog the mic and the conversation becomes one-way.

By keeping these simple principles in mind and showing sincerity, you will be able to start off on the right foot on any occasion. Remember: these people might become important business associates or maybe even your new best friends!
