Common Phrases

Sometimes being too direct with our opinions can bring unintended conflicts, whether it’s in the workplace or our daily lives. We’ve compiled the different ways to express our opinions in subtle, but still upfront, ways to help you through those awkward moments when you want to disagree with a coworker or a friend.

Let’s agree to disagree.

This one is pretty common and slightly old-fashioned, but still a safe way to voice your opinion.

I beg to differ.

Strong, upfront, but not overly harsh or aggressive. In a way, you’re asking for the other party to take a look from your stance.

I guess you can say that, but…

You’re letting the other side down easy with this phrase. You are showing that you understand what they’re trying to say, then using the conjunction ‘but’ to introduce your point of view.

____________________

That’s one way to think about it; however ….

Some people may become overly defensive when others disagree with them, so instead of turning them down right away, let them know they’re bringing a new perspective into the discussion before voicing your own.

Those are some valid points, but what I’m trying to say is…

As with the previous one, this phrase concurs that the other party has brought some good ideas to the table, but you also want them to hear what you’ve got to say.

What to Avoid

Hostility

As mentioned, the way you sound sometimes matters more than what you say. You need to make sure you don’t sound condescending, or things may escalate in ways you don’t want.

Flat-out Rejection

Saying things like ‘no, you’re wrong’, or even just ‘no’ can hurt and even anger someone. It can also sound very annoying and unpleasant, whether at work, at home, or at school.

Offensive Body Language

Avoid holding your hand out as if to stop someone, or vigorously shaking your head in disapproval. Not only will the other party feel offended, rejected, but also embarrassed.

We all need to be a bit more considerate at times and think in others’ shoes. No matter how strongly we feel about what we have to say, it never hurts to take a step back and explore the issue at hand from different angles.
